Awake Launches The Deadly Watch, A Tribute To Iconic Cinema

Awake expands its creative Son Mai series with a new limited edition inspired by the visual universe of Kill Bill Vol. 1. Named The Deadly Watch, this release continues the brand’s exploration of film-influenced timepieces while staying true to Awake’s emphasis on artisanal dial work and sustainable watchmaking. The model is produced in a run of 88 numbered pieces, a direct reference to the “Crazy 88” group from the movie.

Son Mai Craftsmanship at the Core

The centerpiece of this edition is its hand-crafted lacquer dial, created in Awake’s Hanoi workshop using traditional Vietnamese Son Mai techniques. This artisanal method involves building up multiple layers of natural lacquer mixed with custom pigments developed specifically for this watch. For The Deadly Watch, the dial blends yellow, red, and black—three colors chosen to reflect key visual themes connected to the film. Each dial requires nearly ten hours of manual craftsmanship, which means every piece carries subtle variations and a distinctive interplay of depth and light. To ensure strong legibility, the indexes and hands are finished with Awake’s signature Super-LumiNova treatment.

Design Cues and Finishing Details

While the watch draws inspiration from cinema, the design remains discreet and detail-driven. At 6 o’clock, two miniature katana appliqués introduce a thematic but understated touch. The typography of the Awake logo on this model echoes the style of classic Western cinema lettering, creating a link between the watch and the broader pop-culture influences behind the project.

On the reverse side, the engraved caseback presents several symbolic motifs associated with the film, including the iconic quote “I’m gonna kill Bill,” four M16 bullet engravings, and the individual number of each piece within the 88-piece series. These engravings are executed with sharp precision, enhancing the handcrafted character of the entire creation.

The watch uses the familiar 39 mm recycled stainless steel case from the Son Mai collection. Its balanced proportions and combination of brushed and polished surfaces give it a refined yet contemporary presence on the wrist. Water resistance specifications remain consistent with other models in the series.

Movement: La Joux-Perret G101

Powering the watch is the La Joux-Perret G101, a modern Swiss-made automatic movement valued for its reliability and efficiency. It provides a power reserve of 68 hours, allowing for extended wear between windings, and features a custom rotor designed exclusively for this edition. The choice of movement underscores Awake’s commitment to elevating the mechanical quality of its limited Son Mai releases.

Strap Inspired by an Iconic Look

Completing the watch is a strap crafted from matte black Barenia calfskin, a leather known for its smooth texture and long-lasting wear. The inside of the strap is lined with bright yellow leather, and the stitching alternates between yellow and red. This combination mirrors the recognizable color palette associated with the main character’s costume in the film, connecting the strap to the watch’s overall theme without overwhelming the design.

A Limited Edition with a Collector’s Twist

To mark the release, Awake has added an extra surprise for buyers: two collectors will receive a Golden Ticket that grants them an exact replica of the katana famously used in the movie. This additional element reinforces the playful, collector-focused spirit of the edition.
