Audemars Piguet brings the new Neo Frame Jumping Hour to its line, a timepiece that revisits one of the manufacture’s lesser-known complications through a distinctly modern design language. Inspired by Audemars Piguet jump-hour wristwatches from the early 20th century, this new model combines an archival display concept with contemporary materials, construction techniques, and movement architecture.

Case Design and Dimensions

The Audemars Piguet Neo Frame Jumping Hour is housed in an 18K pink gold case measuring 32.60 mm in diameter, 34 mm in length, and 8.80 mm in thickness. The compact proportions are paired with an unconventional silhouette, defined by pronounced gadrooned flanks that extend along both sides of the case.

These sculptural elements reference the Streamline Moderne aesthetic of the late Art Deco era, a design movement characterized by elongated forms and architectural symmetry. Rather than serving a purely decorative role, the flanks frame the dial opening and contribute to the watch’s strong visual identity.

Sapphire Dial Construction and Time Display

The watch features a time display à guichets, with jumping hours at 12 o’clock and trailing minutes at 6 o’clock. The dial itself is constructed from a black PVD-treated sapphire plate, allowing the apertures and surrounding frames to stand out clearly against the dark background.

Rose-toned frames outline both windows, while black discs beneath display the hours and minutes. The Audemars Piguet signature is positioned discreetly below the minute aperture. Notably, the sapphire dial extends beyond the traditional case boundary at both 12 and 6 o’clock, visually integrating the dial with the strap.

To achieve this design, the sapphire panel is bonded directly to the underlying plate, a construction method that allows the watch to maintain a water resistance of 20 meters despite the extensive use of sapphire on the front.

Movement: Caliber 7122

Powering the Neo Frame Jumping Hour is the Audemars Piguet Caliber 7122, an automatic movement derived from the Caliber 7121 used in the Royal Oak “Jumbo” models. For this application, the base architecture has been adapted to accommodate the jumping-hour mechanism and disc-based minute display.

The movement measures 29.60 mm in diameter, operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), and delivers a 52-hour power reserve. In total, the caliber is composed of 293 components.

Special attention has been given to the materials used for the display discs. The hour disc is made of titanium, while the minute disc is crafted from aluminum. According to Audemars Piguet, these lightweight metals improve shock resistance by reducing the inertia of the rotating components.

Historical Context

Jump-hour watches occupy a specific chapter in Audemars Piguet’s early history. The manufacture introduced its first jump-hour wristwatch in 1921, alongside a pocket watch using the same complication. Between 1924 and 1951, Audemars Piguet produced 347 jump-hour watches, with 135 examples featuring dual apertures similar to the layout seen in the Neo Frame Jumping Hour.

Originally, the recessed apertures and protective upper surfaces were intended to enhance durability. The Neo Frame Jumping Hour retains the fundamental display concept while translating it into a contemporary context through sapphire construction, modern materials, and updated movement technology.

Strap and Wearing Experience

The watch is delivered on a black patterned calfskin strap, designed to visually align with the extended sapphire dial sections. The strap reinforces the overall monochromatic theme while providing contrast to the pink gold case.
