Atelier Wen Ancestra (Jiao): A Chinese Cultural Masterpiece
Atelier Wen returns with a new chapter in its exploration of Chinese culture through high-end watchmaking. The Ancestra (Jiao) Launch Edition is a refined and elegant dress watch that blends deeply rooted Chinese symbolism with the precision and reliability of French horological engineering. This latest release showcases the brand’s continued commitment to cultural storytelling through artisanal craftsmanship and modern watchmaking technology.

A Case Inspired by Ancient Mythology
The Ancestra is housed in a 38 mm case crafted from 904L stainless steel, a material prized for its enhanced resistance to corrosion and its brighter, more lustrous appearance compared to standard 316L steel. At 11.30 mm in thickness, the watch maintains a sleek profile on the wrist.

A distinctive design element is the detached lug construction, inspired by the Zu Long dragon — one of the earliest representations of dragons in Chinese history. This sculptural approach gives the watch a unique visual identity while subtly linking it to traditional mythology. The case is finished with a combination of polished bevels and finely brushed surfaces, reflecting the brand’s attention to detail.
A Grand Feu Enamel Dial Rich in Symbolism
The centerpiece of the Ancestra is its hand-hammered fumé dial, transitioning from pale silver in the center to deep cobalt blue at the edges. This layered texture is achieved through the Grand Feu enameling technique, performed by the acclaimed Kong Lingjun workshop in China. The process requires up to 20 days per dial, with a high failure rate due to its complexity—making each successful piece a testament to artisanal skill and patience.

Time is displayed via rhodium-plated leaf-shaped hands, which feature a frosted spine and polished edges. The hour markers alternate between baguette-cut diamonds and traditional Chinese calligraphy symbols, with a swirling minute track inspired by border patterns found in ancient Chinese artwork. A Western Arabic numeral dial version is also available for those who prefer a more familiar layout.
Powered by French Craftsmanship
For the first time, Atelier Wen integrates a European movement into its timepieces. The EPM03 calibre is sourced from Pequignet, a French manufacturer known for its in-house developments. This automatic movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz) and offers an impressive 65-hour power reserve. It is finely regulated to an average deviation of ±2 seconds per day, placing it well within chronometer-level standards.

The movement’s three-quarter bridge features a micro-etched motif of the ancient Chinese poem Questions to Heaven, while the 5N rose gold-plated rotor incorporates a Pellaton winding system and echoes the dial’s decorative motif. Additional finishing includes a mirror-polished ratchet wheel and balance bridge, further elevating the overall aesthetic of the movement.
Strap and Availability
The Ancestra is paired with a taupe-grained calfskin leather strap, fastened with a hand-finished pin buckle that matches the case’s brushed and polished surfaces.

While the watch is not a numbered limited edition, Atelier Wen is offering it for a seven-day pre-order window, with deliveries expected in Q2 of 2026. The price is set at USD 5,850 (excluding VAT).
