Anoma A1 Optical: Design-Driven Innovation With A Mesmerizing Dial
Anoma Watches, a young London-based microbrand founded by Matteo Violet-Vianello, continues its pursuit of sculptural watchmaking with the reintroduction of its debut model, the A1 — this time in a new, visually striking version dubbed the A1 Optical. This release further cements the brand’s emphasis on unconventional forms, artistic influence, and functional design.

At the core of the A1 Optical is its distinctive rounded triangular case, a shape that breaks away from traditional norms. Crafted from stainless steel and measuring 39 mm by 38 mm with a thickness of 9.45 mm, the asymmetrical case features no visible lugs or crown, reinforcing its smooth, fluid profile. The crown itself is recessed and accessible via a cleverly integrated cut-out on the caseback—a thoughtful solution that preserves the uninterrupted geometry of the case.

The standout feature of the A1 Optical is its Op Art-inspired dial, developed in collaboration with optical artist Adam Fuhrer. This dial incorporates 50 engraved, distorted triangular patterns — each mirroring the organic case silhouette — which have been individually finished using a combination of sandblasting and hand polishing. The result is a dial that plays with light and perspective, creating optical illusions of movement and depth as the wrist moves.

The A1 Optical is available in two dial variants — silver and copper — each matched with a grey, grained Italian leather strap. The leaf-shaped hour and minute hands continue the curvilinear aesthetic of the case, creating a coherent and flowing design language throughout the watch.
Powering the watch is the Swiss Sellita SW100 automatic movement, known for its reliability and compact dimensions. It delivers a 42-hour power reserve and is concealed beneath a screw-down caseback that ensures both robustness and a clean aesthetic.

Each colorway of the Anoma A1 Optical is limited to 150 individually numbered pieces, and every watch comes with a numbered artwork by Adam Fuhrer, reinforcing the collaboration’s artistic spirit. The watches are priced at GBP 2,200 (excluding tax), with pre-orders opening on 7 August at 14:00 GMT. Deliveries are expected to begin in October 2025, and non-numbered editions are planned for release later in the year.

The A1 Optical exemplifies Anoma’s dedication to merging contemporary art and industrial design in a wearable format — offering a bold statement for collectors seeking form, concept, and originality.
