A Smaller Flieger Takes Flight: Meet the New Tutima T5

Pilot’s watches are traditionally associated with large cases, high-contrast dials and uncompromising functionality. The new Tutima Flieger T5 Titanium takes those familiar ingredients and puts greater emphasis on something that is becoming increasingly important in contemporary watchmaking: wearability.

At 38 mm, the Flieger T5 is considerably more compact than the 41 mm models in the collection, while its Grade 5 titanium construction further changes how the watch feels on the wrist. The result is a Flieger that retains its instrument-watch identity but is easier to imagine as an everyday mechanical watch.

The Importance of 38.5mm

The headline specification is arguably not the movement or even the titanium case, but the diameter.

At 38.50 mm, the Flieger T5 occupies a versatile middle ground. It is large enough to preserve the visual presence expected from a pilot’s watch, yet small enough to avoid the oversized proportions associated with some traditional aviation designs.

Its 12.50 mm thickness also gives the watch a substantial mechanical presence without making it excessively bulky. Short lugs contribute to the compact footprint, helping the case sit closer to the wrist.

This change in proportions is particularly relevant because the Flieger’s design does not depend on a large case to remain legible. The dial does most of that work.

Titanium Changes the Character

Tutima uses Grade 5 titanium for the case and bracelet, bringing the familiar advantages of the material: low weight, high strength and strong resistance to corrosion.

For a watch intended to be worn regularly, the reduction in weight can be just as important as the technical properties of the material. Combined with the smaller case, it gives the Flieger T5 a considerably more discreet physical presence than its dimensions alone might suggest.

The predominantly satin-brushed case reinforces the functional character, while polished surfaces on the bezel, crown and bracelet’s centre links prevent the watch from becoming visually austere.

The large, fluted screw-down crown is another reminder of the Flieger’s practical origins. It is designed to be easily manipulated while contributing to the distinctive profile of the case.

Water resistance reaches 100 metres, and the watch uses a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment.

Everything on the Dial Has a Purpose

The dial is where Tutima’s aviation background becomes most obvious.

Available in black or blue lacquer, it combines a relatively clean layout with strong visual hierarchy. The orientation triangle and two dots at 12 o’clock immediately establish the pilot-watch identity, while baton markers and Arabic numerals provide straightforward time reading.

The sword-shaped hour and minute hands are heavily coated with Super-LumiNova, as are the principal hour markers. This makes low-light visibility one of the watch’s defining functional characteristics rather than simply a decorative feature.

A red central seconds hand adds the strongest splash of colour, while the date display at 6 o’clock is positioned symmetrically within the dial. The date disc is colour-matched to the dial, helping it integrate into the design.

Interestingly, Tutima has avoided adding additional complications or decorative elements. There is no GMT hand, power-reserve indicator or chronograph functionality competing for attention. The result is a watch that remains focused on its primary task: displaying the time clearly.

A Proven Mechanical Foundation

The Flieger T5 is powered by Tutima calibre 330, an automatic movement based on the ETA 2836.

It operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers around 41 hours of power reserve. Through the sapphire caseback, the movement can be seen along with its rhodium-plated finish and rotor carrying Tutima’s gold “T” emblem.

This is not a movement chosen to make the Flieger T5 a showcase of haute horlogerie. Instead, the calibre’s appeal lies in its established architecture and practical serviceability.

For a watch whose emphasis is on daily use, that approach makes sense. The mechanical engine is there to provide reliable automatic timekeeping without distracting from the watch’s broader purpose.

Two Personalities

Tutima offers an interesting choice in how the Flieger T5 is worn.

The three-row titanium bracelet reinforces the contemporary side of the watch. It maintains the lightweight construction while introducing polished centre links that give the otherwise utilitarian case a more sophisticated appearance.

The alternative brown Horween leather strap moves in the opposite direction. Its vintage character works naturally with the pilot-watch concept and makes the watch feel more closely connected to traditional aviation instruments.

This means the same 38.50 mm case can occupy two rather different positions: a modern, lightweight sports watch on titanium or a more traditional pilot’s watch on leather.

A Flieger Without the Excess

The most interesting aspect of the Flieger T5 may ultimately be what Tutima has chosen not to change.

The watch still has the essential ingredients of the Flieger formula: exceptional legibility, luminous hands and markers, a prominent 12 o’clock orientation marker, a robust crown and a straightforward automatic movement.

What has changed is the scale and material.

By reducing the diameter to 38.50 mm and using titanium throughout the case and bracelet, Tutima has made the Flieger easier to wear beyond its original aviation context. The polished details and lacquered dials also give it enough refinement to work as an everyday watch rather than simply an instrument-inspired piece.

That makes the Flieger T5 an interesting evolution of Tutima’s formula: not a radical reinterpretation, but a more compact and versatile expression of what a modern Flieger can be.
