A New Take On Pilot Watches: Alpina Startimer Chronograph With IFR Calculator Bezel
The latest collaboration between Watch Angels and Alpina pushes the pilot’s watch concept into highly specialized territory with the new Startimer Pilot Chronograph Automatic IFR. More than a traditional aviation-inspired chronograph, the limited edition introduces a mechanical IFR holding pattern calculator developed to assist pilots during instrument flight operations.

While pilot watches are usually focused on legibility, chronograph timing, and GMT functionality, this model incorporates a practical navigation-related feature directly into its bezel system, offering a tool designed specifically for Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) procedures.
A Mechanical IFR Holding Pattern Calculator
The defining feature of the watch is its integrated IFR approach calculator, created to help pilots determine the correct entry procedure into an airport holding pattern.

In aviation, holding patterns are oval-shaped flight paths used to organize aircraft before landing clearance is granted. Depending on the aircraft’s arrival direction relative to the holding fix, pilots must perform one of three standard entry procedures: direct, teardrop, or parallel.
The Startimer Pilot Chronograph Automatic IFR simplifies this process through a bidirectional rotating bezel with a dual-position operating system. Pilots first align the bezel with the inbound course of the holding pattern and then set the aircraft’s current heading. Once configured, the watch indicates the appropriate entry procedure and the required heading adjustments, with color-coded guidance designed for quick readability.
To further emphasize its professional aviation purpose, the caseback is engraved with diagrams illustrating the three holding pattern entry methods.
Oversized Pilot Watch Case
The watch comes housed in a stainless steel case measuring 43 mm in diameter, while the oversized bezel extends the overall footprint to 44.50 mm. Its large proportions are consistent with the functionality-focused design language expected from modern pilot watches.

The bezel features a ceramic insert for added durability and scratch resistance, while the case offers 100 meters of water resistance. The overall architecture is based on the updated Startimer platform introduced earlier this year.
Blue Dial with GMT and Chronograph Functions
The dial features a blue sunray-brushed finish that acts as a clean backdrop for the extensive information displayed across its surface. The outer section is dedicated to the IFR calculator system, while the central area maintains a traditional pilot watch layout with large hour markers and clear minute tracking.

Positioned between the primary hour markers is a 24-hour scale linked to the central GMT hand, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone. The chronograph display adopts a vertical tricompax arrangement, with a 15-minute counter located at 12 o’clock, a running seconds display at 9 o’clock, and a 12-hour chronograph counter positioned at 6 o’clock.
Inside, the watch is powered by the Sellita 531b automatic movement with 25 jewels, operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivering up to 62 hours of power reserve.
