A New Era On The Thames: The CHANEL J12 Boat Race Debuts This Sunday
History meets haute horlogerie as The Boat Race, the UK’s oldest sporting event, returns this Sunday, April 13, with a new name and an iconic partner. Now officially titled The CHANEL J12 Boat Race, the 2025 edition marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between CHANEL and The Boat Race Company Ltd., first announced in October 2024.

For the first time in its 195-year history, the legendary rowing regatta—where Oxford and Cambridge University crews go head-to-head over four miles of the River Thames—welcomes a title sponsor who is also the official timing partner. CHANEL’s involvement underscores a shared commitment to precision, teamwork, and timeless excellence.
In a fitting celebration of the union between sport and design, this year’s winning crews will be awarded the black CHANEL J12—a unisex timepiece first launched in 2000, and recently showcased at Watches and Wonders 2025. Crafted in Switzerland and powered by Kenissi movements, the J12 has become a symbol of modern watchmaking and enduring style.

“Synchronicity in rowing is as crucial to the race as it is in watchmaking,” said Frédéric Grangié, President of CHANEL Watches & Fine Jewellery. “Every rower, like every mechanism in a watch, must work together in perfect harmony.”
Much like CHANEL’s trailblazing founder, Gabrielle Chanel—who revolutionized women’s fashion by merging elegance with freedom of movement—The Boat Race celebrates the pushing of boundaries and the pursuit of excellence. It is, as organizers say, a day that encapsulates the very essence of Oxford and Cambridge: to nurture exceptional talent and inspire greatness.

As the world tunes in and crowds line the Thames, The CHANEL J12 Boat Race sets the tone for a bold new era—where tradition, innovation, and elegance row in perfect time.
