A New Dimension Of Light: The Citizen Eco-Drive Photon
To mark half a century of its light-powered watchmaking technology, Citizen introduces the Eco-Drive Photon—a technically driven release that highlights both material innovation and dial engineering. Rather than leaning on heritage aesthetics, this model focuses on how light can be captured, transmitted, and visually expressed on the wrist.

A New Generation of Eco-Drive Technology
At the heart of the Photon is Citizen’s latest Eco-Drive movement, the caliber E036. Like all Eco-Drive watches, it converts light—whether natural or artificial—into energy stored in a rechargeable cell. What distinguishes this new caliber is its efficiency: once fully charged, it can run autonomously for up to one year, while maintaining an accuracy rated at ±15 seconds per month. Even under low-light conditions, the system continues to operate reliably, reinforcing one of Eco-Drive’s key advantages—eliminating the need for battery replacements without compromising performance.

Lightweight Case Engineering in Super Titanium
The Eco-Drive Photon is housed in a 39.60 mm case with a thickness of 9.90 mm, offering a balanced profile on the wrist. It is constructed using Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium, a material known for being both significantly lighter than stainless steel and more resistant to scratches.

Two versions are available. One comes in a silver-toned finish enhanced by a Duratect titanium carbide coating, while the other adopts a more contrasting aesthetic, combining Duratect DLC with amber yellow accents to create a black-and-gold appearance. Both versions are paired with integrated bracelets made from the same material, each equipped with a micro-adjustment system built into the clasp for improved comfort.
The watch is protected by a dual spherical sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, while the caseback remains solid and features an engraved 50th-anniversary motif along with individual limited-edition numbering.
A Dial Designed Around Light Transmission
The defining feature of the Photon is its dial construction. Instead of a conventional single-layer design, Citizen uses two overlapping dial plates. This approach allows sufficient light to pass through to power the movement, while also introducing a sense of depth and dimensionality.

Color is achieved through a structural color film rather than traditional pigments. In this process, microscopic surface structures interact with incoming light, producing hues that shift depending on the viewing angle. The result is a dynamic visual effect, available in either a blue-toned version with cooler reflections or a gold-toned variant with warmer highlights. Beyond aesthetics, this construction plays a functional role by optimizing light transmission to the movement beneath.
Limited Production and Availability
The Eco-Drive Photon is released as a limited edition, although in relatively generous numbers for a commemorative model. Each version is produced in 5,000 pieces. The standard titanium model is priced at GBP 749, while the more elaborate two-tone DLC version is set at GBP 895.
