A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Date Returns In A Luxurious Pink Gold Edition
When A. Lange & Söhne introduced the Zeitwerk in 2009, it marked a decisive leap forward in contemporary watchmaking: a mechanical timepiece that displayed time digitally through jumping numerals — hours and minutes — arranged on a horizontal axis across the dial. Behind its deceptively simple reading lay a complex orchestration of gears, springs, and levers that ensured instantaneous changes and precise mechanical control.

In 2019, the German manufacture advanced the Zeitwerk collection with the launch of the Zeitwerk Date, a watch that retained the signature digital time display while adding a peripheral date ring to the design. Unlike traditional date windows, this model displays the current date through a red marker on a subtly integrated outer ring, bringing added functionality to the Zeitwerk’s technical proposition without disrupting its visual symmetry.

Six years on, the Zeitwerk Date returns — now offered in a new pink gold variant (Ref. 148.033), marking the second case material in the model’s lineup after the original white gold version. The new execution preserves the characteristic grey dial, but with a date ring that has been subtly warmed to complement the hue of the case.
Key Features and Technical Specifications
At the heart of the Zeitwerk Date is the manually wound calibre L043.8, developed and produced entirely in-house. This movement offers an impressive power reserve of 72 hours, made possible through a system of twin mainspring barrels, which supply consistent torque across its three digital displays — hours, minutes, and the date.
A standout technical feature remains the constant-force escapement (remontoir d’égalité), visible on the dial side via the signature remontoir bridge. This mechanism releases energy at precise 60-second intervals, ensuring that the jumping discs function instantaneously and reliably — a necessity given the energy-intensive nature of the display system.

The case measures 44.20 mm in diameter and has a thickness of 12.30 mm, offering a substantial yet balanced presence on the wrist. The movement operates at a frequency of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5Hz), a deliberate choice that supports the precise timing required by the remontoir. Time-setting and correction are facilitated by a crown located at 2 o’clock, while two integrated pushers located at the 4 and 8 o’clock positions allow for quick adjustment of the hour and date, respectively. These pushers are engineered with Lange’s “negative release” mechanism, meaning the pusher only activates upon release — a system that ensures a consistent force is applied to the movement during adjustments.

The newly introduced pink gold case adds a warmer tone to the otherwise monochrome display. Its soft sheen contrasts subtly with the light grey dial and matching peripheral date ring, whose shade has been delicately modified to harmonize with the warmer metal.
Finishing and Craftsmanship
As expected from A. Lange & Söhne, the calibre L043.8 showcases exemplary hand-finishing throughout. The movement is crafted from untreated German silver and features an array of traditional decorative techniques, including Glashütte ribbing, perlage, anglage, and black-polished components. Notably, this movement includes two hand-engraved bridges — one supporting the balance wheel and the other anchoring the remontoir mechanism — both of which are visible through the sapphire crystal caseback and offer a glimpse into the brand’s mastery of artisanal watchmaking.
