At the end of 2023, Seiko expanded its Seiko 5 Sports collection with the SSK023 and SSK025, two compact GMT models that stepped away from the classic SKX dive-watch format and embraced a more versatile field-watch-inspired design. Now, the brand introduces a new addition to the lineup: the Seiko 5 Sports SSK059, featuring the same appealing grained dial texture, this time executed in crisp white and paired with the elegant 5-link bracelet first seen on the SSK023.

The Same Compact and Versatile Case

For readers discovering this model for the first time, the SSK059 retains the exact specifications that made its predecessors so popular.

The watch comes in a round stainless steel case measuring 39.40 mm in diameter, 13.60 mm in thickness and 47.90 mm lug-to-lug. These dimensions make it significantly more wearable than the old SKX-based GMTs and suitable for a wide range of wrist sizes. The case is predominantly brushed, reinforcing its utilitarian character, and it is fitted with a fixed 24-hour bezel in stainless steel.

On top sits a domed Hardlex crystal, while at 3 o’clock we find a fluted crown. The screwed exhibition case back allows a view of the movement inside, and water resistance is rated at 100 meters, ensuring the watch can easily handle daily wear and occasional exposure to water.

A Fresh White Grained Dial

The main update on the SSK059 is its dial. While maintaining the same grainy matte texture introduced with the SSK023 and SSK025, the new version adopts a bright white tone that dramatically changes the watch’s personality.

The layout follows a classic field-watch configuration. A clearly legible outer 12-hour scale dominates the dial, while a smaller inner 24-hour scale supports the GMT function. The applied hour markers and hands are generously filled with Lumibrite to ensure strong visibility in low-light conditions. The central seconds hand features an orange tip for a sporty touch, and the framed date window sits neatly beside the crown at 3 o’clock. Completing the functionality is an additional GMT hand in orange, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone with ease.

The contrast between the white textured dial and the orange GMT accents gives the SSK059 a dynamic and highly legible appearance that will immediately appeal to fans of clean, tool-oriented design.

Automatic GMT Movement

Powering the watch is Seiko’s in-house 4R34 automatic movement. This caliber operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour, offers hacking seconds for precise time setting, allows manual winding and delivers up to 41 hours of power reserve. While it is a caller-style GMT rather than a flyer GMT, it remains one of the most accessible mechanical GMT movements available at this price level.

The 5-Link Bracelet

Like the SSK023, the SSK059 is fitted with a stainless steel 5-row bracelet secured by a folding clasp. This bracelet enhances the watch’s versatility, giving it a slightly more refined presence compared to sportier three-link alternatives, while still maintaining its tool-watch identity.

A Practical and Affordable Explorer II Alternative

Visually, the white dial and bold GMT hand naturally bring to mind the iconic Rolex Rolex Explorer II, particularly the sought-after “Polar” versions.

Of course, the Seiko does not aim to rival Rolex in finishing, prestige or movement architecture. However, at a retail price of GBP 410, the SSK059 positions itself as an extremely compelling and realistic alternative for enthusiasts who appreciate the Explorer II’s aesthetic and functionality but prefer a far more accessible investment.
