A Closer Look At The New Squale 2001 Marina Militare
Squale has unveiled the 2001 Marina Militare, a limited-edition professional dive watch developed according to the specifications requested by the Italian Navy (Marina Militare). Originally created exclusively for military personnel, this civilian release offers enthusiasts the opportunity to own the same watch supplied to members of one of Europe’s most respected naval forces.
Inspired by a Longstanding Military Partnership
Squale’s connection to professional diving and military operations dates back decades. During the 1960s and 1970s, the company became known for manufacturing robust dive watch cases used by numerous watch brands. Its collaboration with the Italian Navy began in the 1980s and continues today, resulting in purpose-built timepieces designed for demanding underwater environments.

The new 2001 Marina Militare is based on the brand’s established 2001 diver but incorporates several modifications requested directly by the Italian Navy.
Enlarged Case Designed for Enhanced Presence
One of the most noticeable differences is the redesigned stainless steel case. While retaining the characteristic 4 o’clock screw-down crown that has defined the 2001 collection since the 1960s, the Marina Militare version features larger dimensions than the standard model.

The case measures 41.50 mm in diameter and 47.20 mm lug-to-lug, providing greater wrist presence compared to the regular 2001. The watch maintains its professional diving credentials with an impressive 600-meter water resistance rating.
Protecting the dial is a flat sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment, while the caseback is engraved with the official emblem of the Marina Militare.
Military-Inspired Blue Dial
The dial adopts a deep blue color selected according to the Italian Navy’s specifications, reportedly inspired by the shade used in the branch’s ceremonial uniforms.

Legibility was a key priority during development. The watch features large applied hour markers filled with Super-LumiNova, arranged in a classic dive watch configuration with an inverted triangle at 12 o’clock, rectangular markers at 6 and 9 o’clock, and circular indices for the remaining hours.
Complementing the dial is a matching sapphire bezel insert with a fully graduated scale. The bezel incorporates Squale’s push-to-turn locking system, helping prevent accidental adjustments during diving activities.
Reliable Swiss Automatic Movement
Powering the watch is the Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, a proven caliber widely used throughout the industry for its reliability and ease of servicing.

The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4Hz), offers hacking seconds for precise time-setting, and provides approximately 38 hours of power reserve.
Bracelet and Strap Options
Squale supplies the 2001 Marina Militare with two wearing options. Buyers receive a blue rubber strap suitable for aquatic use, alongside a stainless steel bracelet featuring distinctive ladder-style ventilation sections near the case.

The combination allows the watch to transition easily between professional diving applications and everyday wear.
Limited Edition of 500 Pieces
According to Squale, the civilian version is identical to the watches issued to members of the Italian Navy, sharing the same dimensions, specifications, markings, and serial numbering system.
As part of the agreement permitting this public release, Squale has confirmed that this specific combination of enlarged case and Marina Militare blue dial will not be produced again.
The Squale 2001 Marina Militare is limited to 500 pieces worldwide and comes presented in a wooden box, accompanied by both a stainless steel bracelet and a blue rubber strap. The limited-edition diver is available for € 1,990.
