A Closer Look At The New Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon
One of the best surprises revealed at Geneva’s biggest show this year was the new Laurent Ferrier Calendar Moon, an attractive watch reminiscent of the Patek Philippe 5396.
Housed in an elegant polished round case with a robust ball-shaped crown and a dial that features an annual calendar with a moon-phase complication, an absolute first for the watchmaking brand, driven by a carefully decorated manual mechanical movement.
The watch arrives in two variants, one in stainless steel with a blue opaline dial and the other in 18k rose gold with a sunburst silver dial, which comes in a case measuring 40mm in diameter and 12.90mm thick, featuring a smooth bezel, sapphire crystal, fluted crown at 3 o’clock and open case back.
On the dial, we find a composition very similar to the PP 5396, with a recessed double window with the day of the week and the month at noon, a lumed moon phase opening with the northern and southern hemispheres at 6 o’clock that also works as small seconds in Aventurine glass, a date chapter ring that works with the help of a central pointer and Roman numerals and hands painted in white on the steel version and in black on the rose gold version.
Inside lives the LF126.02 manual movement with 266 components that come with a power reserve indicator and an incredible 80h of power reserve. It is adorned with Côtes de Genève on the plates and circular-grained on the main plates.
The watches come attached to a grey Nubuck leather strap for the steel variant and a brown calfskin strap for the rose gold variant with prices of CHF 70,000 and 80,000 respectively.
Our Opinion
Although we are admirers of the brand’s journey and its creations, we believe that the size of the case as well as the prices continue to be one of the stumbling blocks of the brand.
As we have already mentioned, the new Classic Moon is a very beautiful watch that impresses, however, we cannot fail to mention that 40mm in width combined with 12.90mm in height is too much, another debatable point is the Roman numerals, some like it and some don’t, we would have chosen another path here.
The price is unlikely to leave many people with a smile on their faces, as both the PP 5396 in rose gold and the white gold version launched this year with baguette-cut diamond hour markers come at lower prices than the new Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon in steel.
